RATIONALE

The seminar/study tour aims to be an introduction to the ancient history of Romania, a south-east European country inhabited by the Romanians, a Romanic and Christian-Orthodox race speaking a Romance language. Emphasis is laid on the vestiges and various forms of evidence of the country’s ancient past, turbulent history, and syncretic culture.

The focus of attention is directed to Dobrudja, one of Romania’s eight historical provinces, a fertile region placed between the lower Danube and the Black Sea, with indelible traces left by the superposed ancient civilizations of the Geto-Thracians, Greeks, Romans and Byzantine Romans who once populated its territory, and whose specific mixture cannot be found elsewhere in Europe.

A cultural voyage to Dobrudja could signify a rewarding experience, both professionally and personally, alongside the discovery of little known if at all vestiges and treasures of a region whose ancient history is singular, and yet so very much alike to other parts of Europe.

VENUE

The seminar starts and ends in Bucharest (2 overnights), with 5 overnights in the same place, at Mangalia. Daily trips will be made from Mangalia to Albești, Constantza, Histria and Adamclisi.

The participation fee of 795 or 555 Euro/ person respectively includes: local transportation throughout the tour, accommodation in twin-bed room of 4 and respectively 2 star hotels in Bucharest and Mangalia, all meals, English-speaking tour guide and administrator, folder with printed materials.
Supplement single: 160/ 100 Euro

The working language is English.

The environment

The weather at this time of the year is particularly warm and pleasant on the Romanian Black Sea coast.
The Black Sea shore landscape is delightful, with green fields, large orchards and vineyards. Actually, the tour programme includes a wine-tasting stop at Murfatlar, which will give participants a hint as to one of the reasons why Greeks and Romans chose to settle down and enjoy life in Dobrudja during the ancient times.
